課本中 原句

   There was a dog and the old lady sleeping on a chair.  
   句子應修正  There were a dog and an old lady sleeping on a bench. (課本中的圖是bench)

老師 您好，
關於您所提到在Book 6 - Unit 3 的會話中，
There was a dog and the old lday sleeping on the chair. 

因在There is / are 的句型裡，若靠近Be動詞的名詞為單數，
在目前英文的使用，會採 There is / was 來描述，會較自然。
以下為關於此文法說明可讓老師參考
1. 在 Collins Cobuild English Grammar 中「Impersonal subject "there"」
    有說明到，引述:  You also use a singular verb when you are mentioning more that one person or thing and the first noun after the verb is singular.

這個部份我知道，但是上述所說 都是因為聽起來怪怪的，但在文法上，所有的解釋都是sometimes而非must

Some language commentators still insist on using are in sentences like this despite the awkwardness, but actual usage is extremely mixed. Remember, if the sentence sounds awkward either way, you can always rewrite it to avoid the “there is/are” problem altogether.

比較建議的是 不然就把它分開吧!!  There was an old lady sleeping on a bench, and her dog was sleeping next to her.
